Jack Morgan
Local Hukerenui identity Jack Morgan is a descendent of an early pioneering family. He began collecting and restoring farm engines as a hobby. Other farm memorabilia soon followed.
Alice Morgan, Jack’s mother, showed the typical strength and determination of the pioneers. Left to raise seven children on her own – her husband Joe died in the influenza epidemic in 1918. She converted a farm from scrub to pasture and milked cows to provide for her family.
Their story is also the story of Hukerenui, Northland.
The Museum
Situated adjacent to the historic hotel at Hukerenui, approximately 30km north of Whangarei on State Highway 1, the Jack Morgan Museum houses a fine collection of stationary engines, agricultural implements, artefacts relating to the local area, the railway and local maori. It tells the story of pioneer women in agriculture in the Hukerenui district.
The museum opened in 2010 and was established over a three year period with a huge financial input from the past and present Hukerenui community along with grants from ASB Community Trust, Oxford Trust, Lion Foundation, Pub Charities and Whangarei District Council.
